Working MethodProductionVast parts of the video story (takes with the model Ophelia and with the heroin-addict prostitute Alexandra, an unsuccessful suicide) developed by performances. They are documentations of real incidents. The film was partially shot in public places. As a result, real figures participated in the action, unaware of their becoming part of the narration (ex.: security personnel in the Arcades shopping centre, at Potsdamer Platz). Fiction and real life are being blended together in order to become a composed reality. Our production method is, for the time being, to film all the back-stage stories (including the use of make-up) and to decide only during the post production about the material that will be finally used. Every time, real processes are being triggered and then staged. Often the camera work is done by the characters involved in the story. Consequently, the interaction of the characters can be very intimate and personal. Post productionThe material – media traces of real processes - generated in the way that is described above is first put into the archives and then organized. Different people have access to this material. They may produce their own work out of it and they may also collaberate with others in order to use their edited sequences, texts and pictures. Our goal is a "subjective collectivity”, which means asking the question how authorship without compromising could be possible in a network. The material is being confronted as a dialog partner. It is not about using the material in order to promote our own ideas and clichés but about the surplus in the takes where the technical media captures “reality” and the outside world beyond the ideas of the author. DistributionBesides the three blogs theory, Malaria7s blog (story told by Malaria7) and Backstage and this SOMA-Site there will be several shows, in which conventions of the cinema and of the theatre will mix with those of performance. During some of these events, discussions will be held about methods and theory. One of our most important formats is [Narratives Vj-ing]: One character tells the audience what he/she experienced and shows video scraps. Then the audience may choose what video scraps they want to see next. Therefore, the narration will be created and perfected in a powerful and original way. A feature film will then be edited, which may use all the material for its purposes. Moreover, there will be an exhibition, Malaria's blog, a small, rather theoretical, publication Medientheater, a lecture, etc. In the end, all these outcomes will be linked to each other, by this platform, but not only. Post production and distribution may mingle and the audience is invited to use the archives and participate in its own way. When this will happen, the audience will be transformed into authors.

The FADE TO BLACK Projectis an experimental archives and video project that offers new methods of work and production using digital technology and the potential of Web 2.0. ·········································· The formatLabordevelopes new formats for the digital age. The formatLaborexplores communications and the use of media and investigates their epistemological, cognitive and aisthetic meaning. The formatLabordevelops experimental social and media formats and working methods. We are particularly interested in the relationship between author and method, knowledge and society and the consequences of the universal media convergence. The formatLaborexperiments with different formats like video and audio installations, open screenings, radio sessions, live TV, theory disco, scenical readings, mini radio, narrative Vj-ing, temporary architecture and sound arrangement, with New Music as palm court music or with theory theatre. In our events we also present or perform format experiments, which in the traditional sense do not belong to any kind of theatre (i.e. book-, journal-, radio and collective writing projects) or which are held in other places (i.e. performances in public spaces, passer-by interviews a.o.).
The formatLabororganizes different events, lectures, colloquia and seminars, exhibtions, live shows and performances and Salons. Here you can subscribe to our mailing list |
